在1997年，作者記錄了香港島和九龍半島約有374幢戰前華人屋宇，而今天只餘268幢，當中只有141幢被評為歷史建築；其中24幢被保育的騎樓，3幢已經拆卸，2幢已經除名，只有3幢被定為法定古蹟；在全港1248項被確定或評為歷史建築的項目當中，戰前華人屋宇數目約佔一成。


香港戰前華人屋宇正在以驚人的速度消逝，於是1997年始，作者拿着菲林相機，遊走全港，為戰前華人屋宇做拍攝紀錄。


全書分為上下兩冊，上冊講述戰前華人屋宇的歷史演變和香港市民的生活故事，下冊以大量圖片全面呈現戰前華人屋宇的面貌，並推薦遊覽現存戰前華人屋宇的漫步路線。

作者簡介


黃棣才

香港中文大學哲學博士（環境科學）、哲學碩士（生物）、香港大學學位教師教育文憑，本地生態學、環境科學、環境保育學者和教育家，致力跨學科研究，對歷史文物興趣濃厚。現任教於香港教育大學科學與環境學系，常為教育刊物撰寫文章，擔任文物和生態導賞課程的導師，介紹本地地質生態、城市規劃、環境保育、古蹟文物和風俗，著有《圖說香港歷史建築》系列叢書。
