本書主題是探究中英鴉片戰爭的起源。作者在第一章即提出有關近代中英關係的十個問題，其後各章則從「地理大發現」後西方人東來說起，探討十九世紀中期以前的中英貿易，從以茶葉為主到以鴉片為主的轉變，以及最終如何引發鴉片戰爭。在最後一章，作者提出對鴉片戰爭，以及近代中外關係的反思。

作者簡介

薛鳳旋，1947年生，倫敦大學倫敦經濟學院博士；曾任教於香港大學地理系、香港浸會大學地理系。專攻城市發展、區域發展、基建和發展策略研究，以及香港、澳門、北京和中西方城市文明史等課題。著作包括：《北京：由傳統國都到社會主義首都》、《香港發展地圖集》、《澳門五百年》、《清明上河圖與北宋城市化》、《西方古城市文明》、《中國城市文明史》、《澳門三百年極簡史》等。
