本書是目前國內專門研究和完整記述北洋軍閥集團興起、發展、紛爭、衰落和消亡的集大成之作。它將北洋軍閥史起點向前推至1895年小站練兵，超越簡單的派系鬥爭敍事，將北洋軍閥興衰分成四個階段，以人際關係網絡（血緣、地緣）重構其形成和發展脈絡，對袁世凱等人物進行辯證重評，指出這一時期並非「全面黑暗」，而是存在法制、經濟、教育等領域的現代化轉型，從而推動了北洋史研究從政治軍事敍事向社會整體轉型研究的變化。

作者簡介

來新夏（1923—2014），字弢盦，齋名邃谷，浙江蕭山人，1946 年畢業於輔仁大學史學系。南開大學教授。曾任南開大學校務委員、圖書館學系系主任、校圖書館館長、南開大學出版社社長兼總編輯，並兼任中國近現代史史料學學會名譽會長、中國地方志協會學術委員、全國高校圖書情報工作委員會常委等。學術著作有《林則徐年譜長編》《中國近代史述叢》《古典目錄學》《近三百年人物年譜知見錄（增訂本）》《書目答問匯補》《中國地方志》《北洋軍閥史略》《中國近代史資料叢刊．北洋軍閥》（五冊）等三十餘種；並有隨筆集《冷眼熱心》《路與書》《依然集》《邃谷談往》《楓林唱晚》《一葦爭流》《硯邊餘墨》及《不輟集》等多種。
