漢武帝天漢元年（前一〇〇年）蘇武奉命以中郎將持節出使匈奴，因部下參與匈奴內訌，受到牽連被扣留。匈奴多次威脅利誘，欲使其投降；後將他遷到北海（今貝加爾湖）邊牧羊，並宣稱要等公羊生下羊羔，才放蘇武回去。蘇武在那裏歷盡艱辛，經常以挖掘野鼠穴中的草籽爲食，但他出使時所持的漢節卻從不離身，天長日久，節上的毛全都脫落了。即使這樣，仍未動搖他對漢朝的心志。 昭帝即位後，匈奴於始元六年（公元前八十一年）派使者向漢王朝請求和親。方獲釋回漢。蘇武在匈奴被扣留十九年，出使時尚在壯年，回國時已經鬚髮盡白了。爲了表彰他不辱漢節的功績，昭帝封他爲典屬國，秩中二千石，賜錢二百萬，公田二頃，宅一區。宣帝時，被賜爵關內侯，後復爲右曹典屬國。蘇武去世後，漢宣帝將其列爲麒麟閣十一功臣之一，彰顯其節操。
