鄧稼先是中國第一顆原子彈和第一顆氫彈理論方案的主要設計者。鄧稼先從事核武器研究這些年，許多重大理論問題和研究工作都是親身參與、把關、最後拍板定案的，甚至很多方案是他親筆寫的，但他卻沒有署上自己的名字。在中國進行的四十五次核試驗中，鄧稼先三十二次親歷現場，十五次擔任現場總指揮。

鄧稼先隱姓埋名二十八年、為國奉獻、犧牲自我。他還在臨終前用盡生命最後的氣力寫了一份建議書。讓中華人民共和國政府在一九九六年七月二十九日發表聲明，鄭重宣佈：中國暫停核試驗！建議書的具體內容至今還是祕密。對這份建議書的價值，參與研發的科學家于敏與胡思得在回憶文章中深情地寫道：「每當我們在既定目標下，越過核大國佈下的障礙，奪得一個又一個的勝利時，無不從心底欽佩稼先的卓越遠見。
