重視家庭教育，是中華民族的優良傳統，中國早在周朝便出現了「家訓」。南北朝時，《顏氏家訓》問世，從此受到歷代人們的推崇。宋代晁公武稱《顏氏家訓》：「述立身治家之法，辨正時俗之謬，一訓子孫。」明人傅太平在其刻印本〈序〉中說：「蓋〈序致〉至終篇，罔不折衷古今，會理道焉，是可範矣。」清人趙曦明在《抱經堂叢書‧顏氏家訓‧跋》中譽其為：「苟非大愚不靈，未有讀之而不知興起者。」根據這些評論，《顏氏家訓》無論是「立身治家之法，辨正時俗之謬」，「罔不折衷古今，會理道焉，是可範矣」，還是「讀之而不知興起者」，它都把家庭教育放在「修齊治平」這個至高的位置，這與當代家長以「消費意識」要求學校包辦學生順利升學、建立良好操行的觀念是迥然不同的。《顏氏家訓》在今日的意義，不僅僅是規範世人，振奮人心，更重要的是向世人展示家庭對道德與教育的主動承擔。
