司馬遷之所以以廉頗為記敘之首，並非因他功勳最著，是因為廉頗為官時間最久，以他為主線便於敘述趙史，以補《史記‧趙世家》。但最重要的是廉頗胸懷坦蕩，勇於承認錯誤，處處以國家利益為重的胸襟。
