本書為研究香港教育家杜葉錫恩的專著。全書共分十一章，前三章重點敘述她的成長經過，包括求學、信仰及傳道工作，從中突出她堅忍、不屈不撓、不易放棄、關懷民生等優點。第四至八章交代杜葉錫恩如何在艱苦及種種挫折下創辦各所慕光學校及中學的經過，以及申請各種資助，開辦免費診所、為基層人士提供食物、設立公共圖書館等福利事業，同時交代她出任市政局議員，為市民爭取權益，推動教育課程改革、教學語言改革、爭取為少數族裔兒童就學等，為師生謀福利。作者從中分析她的教育理念，肯定她對改善香港基層兒童教育的無私貢獻，公私如一的大愛精神。第九章始，着重敘述杜葉錫恩有教無類的辦學理念及「慕光」五育兼備的教育精神與實踐。作者通過與十四位「慕光人」進行口述歷史訪談，摘錄他們與杜葉錫恩女士的相處經歷及對他們的人生影響，饒有教育意義。書末附件包括大事年表及學生畢業照片等。全書圖文並茂，詳盡敘述一代教育家的成功之由，發人深省之餘，更值得關心教育者借鏡。


作者介紹

區志堅
現任香港樹仁大學歷史學系助理教授、香港旅遊業議會課程評審委員、香港小童群益會品牌委員會委員。曾任香港理工大學香港專上學院助理課程總監兼高級講師，並獲中央研究院近代史研究所、海德堡大學東亞歷史文化學系、北京師範大學歷史文化學院等高等院校及學術機構訪問學人，著作有：合編《香港海關百年史》、《改變香港歷史的六十篇文獻》、《古蹟與文化保存：中日及台港的研究》、《非物質文化遺產在香港》、《五四百周年》、《北學南移》、《從多元角度看中國與世界》、《知識與認同：現代學者論歷史教育及教科書》、The Perspective of the Eastern and Western Culture 及 The Introduction to the People’s Republic of China等，主要從事近代中國學術思想史、社會文化史、香港歷史的教研工作。
