Kūkai (774–835A.D.), esoteric name Henjō Kongō, posthumously honored as Kōbō Daishi, was the eighth patriarch of Tang Esoteric Buddhism and the founder of Japan’s Shingon School. Naturally gifted and deeply devoted to Buddhism from an early age, he joined the Japanese mission to Tang China in search of the true Dharma. In Chang’an he became a disciple of the Mahā-ācārya Huiguo at Qinglong Temple, and received the complete dharma transmissions of the Garbhadhātu and Vajradhātu.
Returning to Japan, Kūkai established the Shingon school and expounded its central doctrine of attaining Buddhahood with the mundane body. Renowned for his strict observance of the precepts, he inaugurated a lineage that has flourished for more than a millennium and recirculated back to China in modern times. He is revered as a founding figure in Japanese culture and a pioneer in Sino-Japanese Buddhist exchange.
This book provides a concise portrait of Kūkai’s life, from his quest for the Dharma and rigorous training to the founding of Shingon School. Modern Chinese and English translations are supplemented to assist spreading his teachings worldwide.

Author’s Biography: Long Yaoming is a scholar who has long been engaged in the study of traditional Chinese culture and the comparative studies of Sino-Western thought. The author has relatively profound and distinctive insights into the essence of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism.From the perspective of spiritual cultivation and cultural inquiry, the author elucidates the core connotations and contemporary significance of these traditions. 譯者：秦萌，男，1982年生，2010年7月畢業於北京大學哲學系（宗教學系），獲哲學博士學位。2010 年8月起任職於中國佛教協會，曾任綜合研究室副主任，現任中國佛教協會常務理事、教育培訓部主任，主要從事文稿起草、佛教教育培訓、宗教政策法規和佛教制度研究等工作。著有《民國時期真言宗回傳中的顯密之爭》（北京：宗教文化出版社，2015年），在《宗教學研究》、《佛學研究》、《中國佛學》、《法音》等期刊發表論文十餘篇。

Translator’s Biography: Qin Meng, male, born in 1982, graduated from Peking University’s Department of Philosophy (Department of Religious Studies) in July 2010 with a Ph.D. in Philosophy. Since August 2010, he has been working at the Buddhist Association of China, where he previously served as deputy director of the General Research Office. Currently, he is a standing council member of the China Buddhist Association and the director of the Education and Training Department. His main work involves drafting official documents, Buddhist education and training, and research on religious policies, laws, and Buddhist institutions. He is the author of The Dispute over the Esoteric and Exoteric in the Transmission of Shingon Buddhism during the Republican Era (Beijing: Religious Culture Publishing House, 2015), and has published more than a dozen articles in journals such as Religious Studies, Buddhist Studies, Chinese Buddhism, and The Voice of Dharma.
